📖 Story
Mark Antony, one of the three rulers of Rome (Second Triumvirate), neglects his political duties because of his passionate love for Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt. Roman leaders, especially Octavius Caesar, disapprove of Antony’s behavior, seeing it as weakness and moral decline.
To restore political balance, Antony marries Octavia, Caesar’s sister, but he soon returns to Cleopatra. This betrayal angers Caesar, leading to war between Antony and Caesar. Cleopatra’s actions during the naval Battle of Actium weaken Antony’s forces, causing his defeat.
Believing Cleopatra to be dead, Antony attempts suicide. Cleopatra, heartbroken and refusing to be paraded as a trophy by Caesar, also commits suicide by applying the bite of an asp (cobra). The play ends with Caesar acknowledging the greatness of their love and granting them a noble burial.
